I guess maybe I'm out of the norm. I feel that the slots can be cut too deep and there fore make 3 different sized billets per butt. Part of the reason for me also is my ring designs require a different slot size from the back rings than for the A billet to make them look right. On some of them I really should do 4 because of the slight variance in the design on both sides of the back sleeve.

Here are some more pics of the rings I built to "try" to match my JMW Titlist.

All of the components; slotted billets, veneer strips, turned billet and completed caps. Also an end view of the slotted billet.

WOW!!
Scott...
You should start advertising and sell caps!!
Many guys still inquire and I can't accomodate them..
I can direct them your way..
Your caps would probally be more reasonable priced than mine anyway..

Alton < Glad to share the business...

Mucho thanks for the answers to my question. Inlaid dot-dash rings???...sounds like a pain in the arse to me...especially if they're supposed to be centered, even, and straight.

If it doesn't throw too many wrenches in the works, I'd love to see a picture of that type of decorative ring, in the build process. I don't know that I've ever seen one being made...or the machinery required to make it.

Mark <---gots some learnin' to do

Here are some rings I'm doing on a Joint Protector now.

The first photo shows the pieces that will go into the pockets. The Ivory Box just to the left of the silver boxes (on the bottom) looks like it's a throw away piece because the silver doesn't appear centered. When the black dots are all in place, I'll sand down the tops and look at them to decide if it's good or junk and go from there. The silver dashes are all cut from silver sheet. There are other ways to do it, but cutting it from the sheet makes it so that both ends have the correct radius on them.

The bottom picture is the Joint Protector with the Pockets cut.

This should help you understand how they are done.

The finished rings should end up looking like the ones in this cue (except this one has 6 boxes instead of 8):

Tony great rings, thanks for adding to this thread.
That's also a sharp looking cue, nice work.

Does anyone have a closeup pic of the Searing "orange crush" rings. They are pretty decorative and cut as three pieces; two wood and one ivory.

I'll post it tonight if no one beats me to it.

Here you go.... that ivory you see is all one single piece. Amazing intricacy that you would even really know about unless you were told.
